Unbroken: review (French title: Invincible)

Affiches de Films (Divers)1

Second movie for Angelina Jolie, the director, and what a movie ! She signs here an amazing production, she's very talented at directing movies.

Jack O'Connell (that you might I've seen in the UK TV show "Skins", in the role of Cook) has the lead role. He evolved so much, this is incredible. That man is so talented (and ultra sexy let's be honest). You might have also seen him in "Starred up" (Les Poings contre les Murs) and '71. His talent explodes in that movie. He's a GREAT, an awesome actor ! Incredible performance.

Let's also mention the talent of Takamasa Ishihara, "The bird"...the crazy jail keeper and then commander of the mines.

After all these compliments, let's focus on the movie itself. It's a real gem, very emotional, very vibrant. We are directly trapped into Louis Zamperini's life and especially during the hard time he's been through during World War Two.

Here's a little resume for those who aren't aware of the storyline: (source: IMDb)

After a near-fatal plane crash in WWII, Olympian Louis Zamperini spends a harrowing 47 days in a raft with two fellow crewmen before he's caught by the Japanese navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp.

My opinion:

This movie, teaches us how to trust ourselves and be confident in the future. Never lose faith, be strong no matter what, rise up during rough times, face your enemy and don't submit yourself. It's a real lesson of life, the movie reminds us how life is important, meaningful and that we can achieve anything as long as we're alive.

Angelina tried and succeed to transmit a message and a powerful emotion. Moreover, she arrived to direct the actors in the way they make you go into the movie. For example, (so you can understand a little bit more what i'm trying to say) in the scene where Louis (Jack O'Connell) is lifting a beam above his head and suddenly that moment happens, THE MOMENT! ... He plundges his eyes into "The bird" ones. It's a duel; a silent fight and in that moment we're not sure how the japonese chief is going to react, we're in the expectation, uncertain, we feel the tension. It's a fight between two strong personalities. We're into the scene, we can't escape and we can't or we stopped breathing for few seconds that seem to be hours. This is also where we can osberve the limit between "friendship" and "rivality". Indeed, the limit is tiny. "The Bird" always seems to be obliged to beat Louis, he looks to suffer from the situation and in the same time he kind of enjoys it. It's weird. And the scene definitely defines that problem and the situation between the two men. This is why I'd say it's my favorite scene. And also because Louis is surpassing himself.

Everyone should be inspired by Zamp's braveness.

Finally, Coldplay signed here a beautiful song called "Miracles". I find this is a perfect title, one of circumstance (very adapted). Louis and his friend Phil are survivors, as we can see with the boat scene. They were in the middle of nowhere or well...lost in the ocean with almost no water, except the rain, no food, under the sun or caught in a storm...and still they've made it. They survived for 47 days. Here's the official music video. Enjoy !

I recommend this movie to everyone and also to Jack O'Connell aficionados who will discover him in a new light.
